Had a great time last night when a large multinational group of pilgrims all linked up (thanks to Danica from Austin who coined the name “Camigos”) at a highly recommended tapas bar for drinks and tapas. Some people come to do the Camino in parts, only able to take off a certain amount of vacation days each year. I have met people who took 5 years to complete the Camino from St Jean to Santiago! Many of the pilgrims in our “Camigo” group of people we see regularly are finished with their Camino “section” in Burgos and many others are planning to take a rest day so it was a farewell of sorts.

Tapas!

Glorious sunrise this morning shining on the cathedral of Burgos as I left the city.

A non-selfie!

While the walking in the city is beautiful, walking on the hard pavement and stone streets all through town and then into the suburbs is really quite hard on feet. It isn’t something I ever noticed before, but I haven’t walked this much before, ever! I was very glad to reach the “soft” gravel paths that started winding their way through the countryside as I left the hustle and bustle of Burgos behind me.

Now I am entering the phase of the Camino that goes across the “Meseta”, a high and dry plateau which can be brutal in the hot sun- today was 91degreesF!Mostly large, mostly flat plains of grain and some sheep herding, it is stark but beautiful. Today there was one hill with a pretty steep decline. The decline is nicknamed “Matamulos” which means “mule-killer” but fear not, gentle readers, no mules died on my watch.

Meseta

Tomorrow’s weather report says it will be cloudy and much cooler which is perfect weather in my mind for walking!
