Spent a lovely evening in Sarria last night after meeting up with my friends from Maine who are walking the rest of the route to Santiago with me. Very chilly morning (45F!) when we started walking with the threat of rain in the forecast. Sarria was very foggy this morning as we left town so I was glad we had gotten a good look down into the town from the hills the night before as there was no evidence of a town at all in the fog!

I knew that many pilgrims joined/started the Camino in Sarria, however I was truly shocked and overwhelmed at the number of people walking with us as we left town compared to three years ago when I walked this same section. Everyone’s Camino journey is their own, so I certainly will not bash the “new” pilgrims, but I was feeling almost claustrophobic with the amount of people. I told my friends we can tell who are the “long haul” pilgrims based on how tan they are or how dirty and beat up their shoes look!

Rolling hills of Galicia farmland and forest will be the theme for the landscape for the rest of the trip.

We decided to stop in the town of Ferreiros to make it a slightly shorter day for my jet lagged friends who have not been walking non-stop for 29 days as I have, but the benefit is we are “off stage” now which helps us avoid the race for beds in Albergues moving forward.
