Weather was cloudy and drizzly this morning so I finally got to use my rain gear! I look like a cooked lobster with a hunchback but it is very effective at keeping my pack and me dry. A restaurant worker told me that they hadn’t had rain in 8 weeks so I wished it for Spain’s sake it had been more than just drizzle. Wind picked up a bit and the clouds thinned out and we had a rainbow!

This part of Spain doesn’t have much stone for building so they use the clay to make brick and adobe type buildings. That unfortunately means many of their oldest structures have not survived as long as in other areas of Spain. The Iglesia de San Lorenzo in Sahagún is an exception- an example of Romanesque Mudejar architecture it combines aspects of Romanesque, Gothic and Muslim styles.

I decided to switch up my routine a little bit. After several nights of gorging myself on dinner at 7:00 and then going to bed at 8:30 still digesting, I have now been eating like a Spaniard the last two days. Having the large meal of the day at 3ish and then only a small sandwich/snack at 7:00 makes for much better sleep for me. Today in Sahagun, I had a delicious sopa Castellana (a garlic soup with paprika and bread crumbs and egg) follow by a steak and French fries, and then flan for dessert. And of course wine.😜

Tomorrow will be a longer day of walking, but I have roughly planned out the rest of my days so that they line up with me getting to Sarria in time to join friends to do the last 100km together. It still blows my mind that I now consider the 13.8m/22km that I walked today to be a “short” day. I am not, nor have I ever been, an athlete. I am notoriously clumsy and uncoordinated; when put into sports as a child, I often just daydreamed, sang songs, and played with my hair… who is this crazy woman who is accomplishing all this walking??? It’s ME!!!
